Hotkey or Python Code for Toggling Back-Projection?

I'm working on an ATOS 5 project where I have a python script running continuously in the background while I'm using the tool.  Occasionally while the script is running, I will use the Project Elements onto Objects button to back-project some shapes directly back onto the part I'm scanning which works fine.  However, to exit the projection mode, I have to hit esc which also stops my python script which I would like to have continue running.  Are there any workarounds?  Any other hotkeys for turning projecting elements off besides escape or any way of controlling that in python or way to prevent my python script from stopping when I hit escape?
